How to Wash & Maintain Your Wig

Treat your wig with care, and it will love you back — staying soft, beautiful, and long-lasting. At Gefily Hair, we believe every unit is an investment in your confidence. Here’s how to keep it looking its best.

General Cleaning Tips

Think of your wig like a delicate silk blouse — gentle care goes a long way.

  • Daily wearers: Clean once a week to remove buildup.

  • Occasional wearers: Clean every 2–3 wears or when needed.

  • Avoid over-washing, which can dry out fibers (especially human hair wigs).

How to Clean a Synthetic Wig

Synthetic wigs require delicate handling — they hold their shape well but don’t like heat or rough treatment.

Steps:

  1. Fill a clean sink or basin with cool water.

  2. Fully immerse the wig, gently drenching it.

  3. Apply synthetic wig shampoo inside the cap — focus on the hairline where oils accumulate.

  4. Gently dip and swirl the wig to activate suds.

  5. Drain the water and rinse with cool water — no twisting or rubbing!

  6. DO NOT comb while wet.

  7. Lay a towel flat, place the wig on it, and roll it gently — never wring or twist.

  8. Pat dry with a towel, then place on a wig stand to air dry completely.

  9. Once dry, brush gently from tips to roots using a wide-tooth comb or wig brush.

💡 Note: Standard brushes or blow dryers can damage synthetic fibers unless the wig is labeled heat-safe.💡

  3. Submerge the wig and let it soak for 5–10 minutes.

  4. Gently run your fingers through the strands from roots to ends.

  5. Rinse thoroughly with clean warm water.

  6. Wrap in a towel and blot gently — no rubbing or twisting.

  7. Comb using a wide-tooth comb, starting from the nape and moving upward.

  8. Place on a wig stand and allow to air dry completely.

Styling a Human Hair Wig

Good news — you can style your human hair wig just like your own natural hair!

Tips:

  • Use flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers — but keep heat away from the base or lace to prevent damage.

  • Use a wide-tooth comb or wire wig brush depending on the hair texture.

  • Always start detangling from tips, working your way up to the roots.

  • For added volume, try electric rollers on medium heat.

Styling a Synthetic Wig

Synthetic wigs are pre-styled, low-maintenance, and ready to wear — but you can still enhance their look!

Quick tips:

  • Shake and finger-style to refresh the shape.

  • For tight curls or ringlets, shake the wig gently and separate curls by hand.

  • For straight styles, brush from crown to ends with long, smooth strokes.

  • If your wig is heat-resistant, test a small back section before using any styling tool. Always use low heat.

How to Store Your Wig

Proper storage preserves your wig’s shape and color between wears.

Always store in a clean, dry place, away from heat or direct sunlight — UV rays can fade color over time.

Best storage options:

  • On a wig stand (ideal for maintaining shape)

  • On a Styrofoam head form

  • Folded inside out and placed in a silk/satin-lined box — helps reduce static and friction

  • Bonus tip: When traveling, store your wig in a satin bag to prevent tangling.
